Vipolže is a scattered village at the edge of Goriška Brda, where the hills drop into the Friulian plain. From here you can explore both sides of the border: the wine cellars of Brda and Collio, Cividale, Aquileia and the sea at Sistiana.

Dobrovo and Šmartno
Dobrovo castle with its exhibition of Zoran Mušič's prints, and Šmartno, a medieval village inside its walls on a hilltop.

Brda is wine country: Rebula, Pinot Grigio, Merlot. There are cellars in almost every village, Vipolže and Medana included.

A lookout tower above the village of Gonjače. On a clear day you can see across Brda to the Alps and the sea.

Cormons and Cividale
Cormons is the wine town of Italian Collio. Cividale is an old Lombard town on the Natisone river, on the UNESCO list.

Palmanova is a star-shaped fortress town, Aquileia a Roman city with a basilica and mosaics. Both are UNESCO sites.

The nearest sea is at Sistiana near Trieste; for sandy beaches go to Grado.
Brda through the year
Spring
The cherry trees blossom, and the cherries ripen in June. Warm enough for cycling and walking.
Summer
Hot days, when the pool is most welcome. Every unit has air conditioning.
Autumn
The grape harvest in the vineyards around the house and cellars with new wine. By October the pool is already cold.
Winter
Quiet days in Brda and the towns of Friuli. The studios and apartments are heated.
How to get here
Address: Vipolže 11, 5212 Dobrovo v Brdih, Slovenia. Parking at the house is free.
From Ljubljana
By motorway to Nova Gorica, then on the road into Brda towards Dobrovo and Vipolže: about 1 hour 35 minutes.
From Italy
From Gorizia or Cormons you reach Vipolže in about a quarter of an hour.
By plane
Trieste airport (Ronchi dei Legionari) is 35 minutes by car, Ljubljana airport 1 hour 45 minutes.
By train
Gorizia Centrale station is 17 minutes by car, Nova Gorica 20 minutes. From there you need a taxi or a hire car.
